In this video, physiotherapist Stuart Turner demonstrates how to image multifidus using real time ultrasound in the parasagittal plane with the patient in sidelying.

Multifidus is thought to play an important role in stabilisation of the spine. It has been documented that multifidus wasting occurs after an episode of back pain and that recovery of this muscle is not spontaneous. Real time ultrasound has been found to be a valid and reliable method of investigating multifidus cross sectional area. Real time ultrasound machines can be a very useful tool in educating patients as to the location of this muscle and how to perform a correct muscle contraction. With training, multifidus cross sectional area can improve and this has been found to correlate with a reduction in back pain symptoms.
